Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from captain Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
