Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Competitors are granted the ability to contest particular rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
