Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together resides a deep meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when the couple relocate from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
