Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
