A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
